Metal-Free Dental Crowns
In dentistry, attention is paid not only to functionality but also to aesthetics. Patients of our clinic want their new teeth to look as natural as their own. That is why metal-free ceramics or metal-ceramics provide the opportunity to create flawless smiles indistinguishable from natural ones.
In Kyiv, at the Crystal Dent clinic, we actively use advanced technologies and only high-quality materials to offer our patients prosthetics and dental restoration at the highest level. Metal-free dental ceramics are one of our main tools to achieve this goal.

What is metal-free ceramics in dentistry?
The doctor of our clinic explained to us what metal-free ceramics are. Metal-free ceramics are a class of dental materials used to create crowns, veneers, inlays, and other orthopedic constructions without the use of a metal framework. Unlike traditional metal-ceramics, where a ceramic layer is applied to a metal base, metal-free ceramic prosthetics are entirely made of ceramic materials.
The main feature of this material lies in its translucency and optical properties, which are as close as possible to natural tooth enamel.
Advantages and disadvantages of metal-free ceramics
Before making the right choice, it is important to understand what advantages and disadvantages metal-free ceramics have.
Advantages:
Highest aesthetics
Metal-free ceramics for teeth have unique transparency and depth of color that imitate tooth enamel. Teeth with metal-free ceramics do not have a grayish shade that often shows through the gum with metal-ceramic crowns. This type of metal-free ceramics is often used for front teeth.
Hypoallergenic
The materials used are fully biocompatible and do not cause allergic reactions, which eliminates the risk of gum irritation or inflammation.
Exceptional strength and durability
Modern types of ceramics, such as zirconium dioxide and e.max metal-free ceramics, have enormous strength comparable to metal. They can withstand significant chewing loads, which is why metal-free ceramics are often used on molars.
Minimal tooth preparation
Due to the high strength of the material, when making crowns and veneers from metal-free ceramics, minimal tooth preparation is required, allowing maximum preservation of healthy tissues.
Thus, crowns made of metal-free ceramics represent an ideal combination of aesthetics and functionality.
Disadvantages:
High cost
Manufacturing requires expensive equipment, special materials, and high qualifications of the doctor and dental technician, which directly affects the final price.
Relative fragility
Despite their high strength, some types of metal-free ceramics (for example, feldspathic) are more prone to chipping and cracking if the doctor’s recommendations are not followed.
Limitations in use
Metal-free ceramics are not suitable for creating long-span bridges (replacement of two or more teeth in a row). For such constructions, metal-free ceramics on a zirconia framework are more often used.
Contraindications
There are certain contraindications for installing metal-free ceramics:
– Severe tooth destruction;
– Deep bite;
– Bruxism (teeth grinding);
– Acute inflammatory diseases in the oral cavity.
It is important to note that many of these disadvantages are relative and depend on the type of metal-free ceramics (for example, zirconia-based ceramics are very strong) and on the specific clinical situation.
Types of metal-free ceramics
Metal-free ceramics are divided into several main types, each with its own features and indications for use:
- Metal-free ceramics e.max. Made from lithium disilicate, they are distinguished by the highest aesthetics and translucency. E.max ceramics are most often used for veneers, thin crowns, and inlays, as they allow achieving maximum transparency and naturalness.
- Metal-free ceramics Empress. This type of ceramics was one of the first and is still widely used. It is made of leucite ceramics and has excellent aesthetics but is inferior in strength to E.max and zirconia. Empress is ideal for single crowns and veneers on front teeth, where exceptional aesthetics are important.
- Metal-free ceramics CEREC. This is a modern technology that allows the manufacture of ceramic crowns and inlays directly in the clinic in a single visit. The CEREC system uses 3D scanning and milling of a ceramic block, which significantly reduces treatment time.
Where is metal-free ceramics used?
The versatility of metal-free ceramics allows their use for solving a wide range of dental tasks, from restoring a single tooth to full prosthetics:
- They are used to restore severely damaged teeth, protect a tooth after root canal treatment, and also to correct the shape and color of teeth. Zirconia crowns are excellent for prosthetics on molars, while E.max ceramics are used for front teeth.
- Metal-free ceramic veneers are thin ceramic plates that are fixed to the front surface of teeth to improve their color, shape, and size. They allow the creation of a Hollywood smile by correcting minor defects such as chips, cracks, or gaps between teeth.
- Metal-free ceramic inlays and onlays. They are used to restore teeth with large carious cavities when ordinary fillings cannot provide sufficient strength.
Technology of manufacturing and installation of metal-free ceramics
The stages of manufacturing metal-free ceramics are a complex and high-tech procedure that requires high skill from the doctor and dental technician:
- Consultation and planning. The doctor conducts an examination, takes images, listens to the patient’s wishes, and creates an individual treatment plan.
- Tooth preparation. The tooth to be restored is carefully prepared (shaped) for the future construction. The doctor removes only the minimally necessary amount of tissues, preserving the tooth as alive as possible.
- Impression taking. Using a digital scanner or traditional impression materials, accurate impressions are taken and sent to the dental laboratory.
- Computer modeling. In the laboratory, the dental technician uses 3D programs to model the future crown or veneer, taking into account all anatomical features and the patient’s wishes.
- Manufacturing. After modeling, the manufacturing process begins. This can be milling from a solid block, or e.max press ceramics, as well as pressing or layered application of ceramics.
- Fitting and fixation. The finished construction is tried on, adjusted if necessary, and finally fixed on the tooth with special composite cement.
Service life and care of metal-free ceramics
With proper care, metal-ceramics or metal-free ceramics can last 15–20 years or more. However, the service life largely depends on the quality of the materials, the professionalism of the doctor, and, of course, the patient themselves.
